Digital TV receiver without a smart card. How to make it work?
I have a Digital TV receiver that has no smart card with it. Is it possible to get hold of a new one and if so where from (in the UK). I’m just after a freeview card.

  2. Jewell S says:

How do I hook up My dolby digital surround receiver to my toshiba dlp tv?
I have an Onkyo dolby digital surround receiver and a toshiba hd dlp TV with one HDMI device. How do I hook the sorround system up to my tv? especially the subwoofer ?

    • sirmrmagic says:

Your speakers and subwoofer will connect to the receiver, look for you speaker/subwoofer connection sheet that came with your receiver, for connection to your TV, check to see if your receiver has the HDMI connection, if it does than you just use the HDMI cord to connect the audio/video to your TV, if not then you need to see what connections you do have and choose what you want to use, like component video, S-video, or composite video, these connections require separate audio cables to connect sound.

  3. Jim D says:

If I get direct tv and pay for 2 receivers-can I hook up the rest of my tv’s using a rooftop digital receiver?
I’d prefer not to pay for cable to my additional televisions (which are not HD) I have 2 HD televisions and will pay DTV. I was told that a rooftop digital receiver will supply my other televisions with local channels and all of the same channels I get with DTV. Can anyone validate that? Where would I find such a receiver?

    • heath1500 says:

A rooftop antenna with a digital converter (needed as of february) will only give you local channels. no more. You will need a reciever for each tv to get more than that

  4. jackmcmalley says:

Use a Direct TV satellite receiver box as a digital converter?
I have a Direct TV satellite receiver box, but my account is on hold. Is there a way to use the Direct TV box as a digital converter so I can watch local channels?

    • Barry in Seneca says:

      In a word… NO. Sorry.

The DirecTV receiver inputs satellite signals of a much higher frequency and different encoding than broadcast DTV. All components are large scale integration ICs with a dedicated application and nothing that can be changed.

Dig deep and pull out the $50 or so to buy an “off-the-air” digital converter box.

  5. Brendan S says:

HD/SD digital tv receiver picture quality?
We just got an HD digital receiver and all the HD channels look amazing. However, now all the SD channels look SOOOO much worse and grainier then when we had analogue SD cable. Why is that? Are all the digital SD channels supposed to look grainier then when we had analogue SD?

    • efflandt says:

Maybe it is due to larger screen than before, and that you have something better (HD) to compare it with. It depends how well your TV up converts it to the native resolution of your screen, and possibly signal strength. Usually with digital either you get a picture or you don’t, but different sets may have different ways of handling an interrupted signal that can appear pixelated.

does my mitsubishi WD-52527HDMI tv receive digital programs without a digital receiver?
I also use dish network do I need to get a digital receiver to watch tv in high definition

    • aztrailwalkers says:

How old is it? Went to web site it only goes back yo 2002. No model numbers for that. Anyway Yes digital but to have HD you need a HD receiver. Dish is all digital unlike cable. I have Dish and a HD tv but there are only 12/14 channels currently using HD and on select shows only! Digital and HD are two seperate things, HD high definitions more resolutions per lines for a better picture quality. Digital broadcast all Dish is that way! no analog!Hope this helps!

i´m not familiar with digital sat. receiver, i used to have a cable. now the problem is I don´t get any channel there is signal but no quality , is that maybe because trees that why i can´t get any quality or maybe not enough high.?

  10. Buckleigh says:

what is the difference between digital tv receiver and hd tv receiver?
I just purchase a VIZIO HDTV and I want to upgrade cable service and the package requires me to choose between a digital receiver and a HD receiver. Can someone give me not-to-technical advice ? Thanks !

    • classicsat says:

The HD receiver (which is digital also) has HD output, and can decode HD channels.

The “Digital” box is SD only and can tune only SD channels. You don’t want that, as you would not be able to enjoy the HD quality of the set.

  11. Jeff N says:

Would digital tv receiver provide better signal with same indoor antenna?
I am now using an indoor antenna and the signal is rather poor.. Will I get a better tv picture just buying a digital tv receiver and using the same indoor antenna? Or there would be just as poor reception?

  12. myfriend says:

Cancel cable and buy digital tv converter?
I want to cancel my cable. Someone suggests the alternative is to watch digital channels (I want to watch channel 63.4 sinovision, NY1, and some local channels ABC, NBC, etc.) . I want to know if what should I buy in order to receive digital channels: digital tv receiver OR digital tv converter OR tv tuner? Should I buy antenna as well? Please no adds. thank you in advance.

As for the channel signals, I am in NYC, Queens.

    • 9121 says:

You need an antenna, no matter what. An outdoor antenna is preferable, but a GOOD amplified indoor antenna should be acceptable as well. A basic indoor antenna will only work well if you live close to the TV station transmitters.

If your TV does not have a digital tuner built in, you will need an external digital tuner, commonly called “digital-to-analog converter box” as well. If your TV is fairly recent and does have a digital tuner built in, you only need an antenna.

  13. TheStrongForce says:

Does anyone know if there is an in dash car stereo with an LCD screen that will receive digital TV signals?
I know they have in dash analog TV receivers…if digital receivers don’t exist in this format…how would one get the analog receivers to receive the digital signal after the switch? Is this possible? Would it be difficult? Thanks ahead for anyone who helps!
Update: Is there a current head unit with an LCD screen that supports digital TV reception? I cannot seem to find one. I don’t want to have to install a converter box but I would if that is the only option. Thanks!

  14. girlie says:

How do I listen to music from my digital cable TV in another room using just a receiver not an actual box top?
So- what I want is a device that is pretty much just a speaker and receiver to pick up the sound from my digital cable TV set box top so I can just listen to a music channel in a room with no TV in it. What is that called, and can you send me some links to one?

  15. John J says:

Have Cable Modem and cable tv;would I get digital TV with a DTV receiver?
I have a cable modem which is digital. I also have analog cable, no set-top box/receiver. If I buy a Digital TV receiver will I be able to have DTV. Or to say do I have the digital TV signal already and only need a receiver.

  16. JOSEPH says:

    Freeview HD digital TV receiver?
I have a Sharp digital TV and a Sharp digital recorder . I only receive a limited choice of channels. Will a FREEVIEW hd DIGITAL tv RECEIVER BOOST THE NUMBER OF CHANNELS AND WILL IT FIT WITH MY PRESENR EQUIPMENT?

    • Twisted_Ace says:

Yes, a Freeview HD will work with your present setup.

However, the only extra channels you would receive are a few HD ones from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 and then, only if you live in an area that can receive Freeview HD.

What type of aerial do you have – indoor, in the loft or outdoor roof-mounted? If you have an indoor or loft aerial, that will be the real reason you can only receive a limited number of channels.

  17. Jonny L says:

A DVR that will receive satellite channels and digital TV channels plus record both?
I have satellite at home in the UK (which uses a digital satellite receiver with a decoder card to receive paid channels), and I am still using old VHS tapes to record satellite and “normal TV” channels. I am thinking of upgrading both the VCR and the satellite receiver mixed in with a digital TV receiver with only one device. Who makes devices like this? And what prices am I looking at?

    • wpcprez says:

I believe your only option is some sort of custom solution like MythTV or windows media center. Maybe Nero’s liquidTV will also work for you

  18. besart says:

How can i connect a digital receiver to my TV tuner card on my PC?
I don’t have a TV tuner yet but i have been looking and i cannot find one with HDMI, i know HDMI wouldn’t work like COAX. but a TV reciever doesn’t have coax output as far as i know so how can i get all of my channels on my computer so i can record the shows on my HDD?

  19. Michael W says:

Can a Bell Satellite receiver be used as a digital tv converter box?
Can any brand of Satellite receiver be adjusted to receive regular, local, digital tv transmissions (stations)?

  20. CJ says:

Is there such a thing as a VCR that records on VHS tapes from a digital TV receiver?
I have purchased the DTV boxes to convert my analog televisions to digital. Now my VCRs won’t record the signals. I would prefer not to go to DVD’s as I can’t find any with a longer recording time than 2 hours – not much help to someone working most of the time and wanting to record all the missed programs!!

    • R T says:

There is no reason the VCR shouldn’t record video from a converter box. Here are a few things to check:

      1. Is the converter box picking up a signal in the first place? Try connecting it directly to a TV to see if you are getting video out of the converter. If not, that is the first thing to correct. Remember, if a digital receiver doesn’t get enough signal, it will look like nothing is there.

      2. How is the converter connected to the VCR? If it is connected to the Antenna port, the VCR must be tuned to the same channel the converter box is outputting. This is usually channel 3 or 4. If you are connecting to the Video inputs of the VCR, you must make sure that input is selected to record.

You can test your set up afterward by connecting the VCR to a TV. The TV must be tuned to the same channel the VCR is outputting; usually channel 3 or 4. Make sure the VCR is turned on, the TV/VCR switch is set to TV and that there is no tape in the machine. You should be able to see the converter box video through the VCR on the TV.

I hope this helps. Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

Sony Freeview Digital Receiver VTX-D800U – Yes or no for my 8 year old Grundig TV?
Hello.I live in Spalding in Lincolnshire UK and apparantly can get Freeview.I’ve spent a while wandering around the freeview set-top boxes reviews, and keep coming across rave reviews for a Sony VTX-D800U Digital Receiver. My tv set is a Grundig square screen and is about 6/7 years old.I know it has a conventional ‘jack plug’ aerial in the back and a SCART connector in the back.I have a brand new aerial installed last month and it is digital compatible. My question is this:-Is my Grundig TV compatible with the Sony VTX-D800U Digital Receiver? If yes, where can I get one here in Lincolnshire? Also,if you have bought this particular model, would you please kindly tell me what you thought of it? Thank you very much for any help, suggestions, recommendations etc regarding my question. I am most obliged. Alan L.

    Cable Digital TV Receiver Rental?
I currently have analog cable from comcast with a Sony Bravia TV (great TV). I currently am getting some digital stations from the cable – a few in HD – so my TV clearly has a reciever for it.

I am planning on upgrading to digital cable but they tell me that I will need to rent a box to get the HD channels.

Do I need the box for HD channels or will I be able to receive them without it?
THe HD I getting now is ABC, CBS, et but it from the analog cable not OTA. I do not have an antenna on the TV.
I do not get discovery. etc in HD

    • Mark the man says:

I am not a tech genius but I have run a technology vidcast in the past so I understand whats going on. Basically there are 2 main types of HD broadcasts. OTA (over the air) is the type you are getting now through the TV’s receiver. Its free, like normal TV for the last 50 yrs and dog-ear antennas but digital. Local stations like NBC FOX CW CBS and ABC broadcast like this. Next there is the Provider Transmitted type (Cable/Satellite.) Since it is not over the air they can provide more channels and from other networks who dont have the means to individually broadcast or are “cable” channels so you need a subscription. Here you have channels in HD like TNT, Discover HD Theater, MHD (mtv+vh1), MOJO, INHD.HDNET, ESPN, plus your normal local channels, etc.

Now in order to receive the HD channels from your cable provider you need to have their HD Enabled Equipment. In this case it is their “box” which enables not only the decoding of their high def broadcast, but can output in true high definition (your TV either has the component, DVI, or HDMI connections for HD.) Now here is where is varies from provider to provider so you should check with your local company, but they can either charge for only the equipment and not the actual channels, or the equipment AND the programming, or neither. The lineup of channels also differs from one provider to the next.

Bottom Line: If you want more channels in HD, like ESPN and TNT, you should pay them for the box. The only negative is since they have more networks they sometimes “compress” the video to fit more channels into their limited bandwidth. This can result in MACRO-BLOCKING, which introduces sometimes unnoticeable to sometimes annoying square boxes across the image. Your OTA transmission you get now is not nearly as compressed and will certainly look better, but you will have less channels. You should talk to your provider about this and decide what is the best decision.

How does a PC digital TV receiver work?
I don’t have any need for a TV because I use my computer mainly, however with the new 15 free-to-air channels they’re bringing into Australia I figure I may as well give myself the option.
I’ve seen a few of these USB-receivers on eBay for a reasonable price. I’m just wondering how it works? Does the receiver actually pick up the signal like an aerial or does it work through the internet? Cheers.

How much more power does a high definition satellite receiver/tv use than a standard digital receiver/tv setup?
I am due to renew my DISHNET subscription next week and have been offered free HD tv for life … I am concerned that HD receiver/television set will use significantly more electricity … I have been unable to find any power usage data for my present setup or the HD … I realize that different equipment uses different amounts of power so a ballpark percentage will answer my question … many thanks!

Do i have to leave my digital TV on to record onto a VCR?
Seems to be that way. Have set Vcr to L1 off TV(built in digital receiver) but if i turn off or leave tv on standby no signal is recorded. So, it seems if a tv show is to be recorded i need to leave the tv on?

Seems a bit weird if this is so called progress?

    • adamh says:

There is progress, something called a PVR which will record a digital channel via its own tuner. Dont blame the tv, get living in the 21st century, VCR’s are such a relic from the past!

Where to get digital TV Receiver?
I would like to know where I can get, not that expensive, but good quality digital TV Receiver that could support also the MPEG4 codec. I am from Europe and would appreciate if those would be from Europe so I don’t need to bother will all additional import taxes. Do I need to be careful on some specifications to get the best digital TV receiver?

    • classicsat says:

Generally, you would buy one branded for or compatible with the service you wish to receive. If it a pay service, in most cases you have no choice but the receiver from the provider.

If you don’t want to pay import taxes, you need to get one sold domestically.

can i receive digital terrestrial tv with a digital satellite receiver (eurostar)?
I only have the receiver not the dish.

    • TV TECH-man® says:

Some satellite boxes have a separate TUNER for the Local HD stations….

If your model does have that, then you can use it to RECIEVE the local stations. You watch the stations on Channel 3 or if you want HD, you must use the COMPONENT or HDMI video output for HD signals to get to your TV set….
Channel 3 is NOT HD at all, it is only SD (low definition)…It’s there for the older non-HD TV sets.

the manufacturers have to by law put a com port on the box.

How did digital TV receivers also accept analog signals?
How was my digital HD set able to receive analog programming off the air before the switch to digital broadcast? Does it have dual tuners, or dual decoders behind a single receiver stage, or what? Can a VHS VCR still be used with an HD digital set?

    • Mr. Smartypants says:

Digital and analog TV are not just differently encoded, they are different frequency bands. So my guess is you have two tuners. TV tuners are really simple these days, hardly anything to them.

As for VHS, well if your TV had composite video outputs, those outputs are analog, because that’s how a traditional CRT works, and how VHS works. Our digital TV has analog inputs and outputs, so I’m guessing they all do, and will for at least the next few years. HDMI is digital.

Any TV receiver will display whatever signal is fed into it. That can be from an over-the-air antenna, a cable or satellite box, a DVD player, or a game box. That is, the set will show whatever you put into it. It has no special capability to reach out and capture broadcasts from distant areas.

The only way for you to view foreign broadcasts is to find them included as special channels in a cable or satellite channel package. And again, that has nothing to do with your TV itself.
